We recently had a chance to catch up with one of our female train drivers, Lynelle Wagg, to find out how she set foot in the Rail industry.
How do you become a train driver?
Trojan Rail runs regular training in Certificate IV in Train Driving; I highly recommend you get in touch with them and apply.
What is the first thing you do at work each day?
When I arrive for work each day, the first thing I do is to let my supervisor know that I have arrived safely. There are often other drivers coming and going, so it is always lovely to catch up with them about your experiences or share any concerns as there are plenty of people who want to help.
What is fun about being a train driver?
I grew up on a farm and have always liked working with machinery; you can’t get much bigger than a fully loaded coal train! At over 2 kilometres long and some 13000 tonnes!
You get to see the quaint countryside out on the track that other people may never have the opportunity to experience.
What makes a good train driver?
A good train driver can work well in a team and has a calm, relaxed nature.
What is the most challenging thing you have had to do in your job as a train driver?
I think that has to be the shift work. I have worked shift work for most of my life, though it takes a little bit to get used to it.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a train driver?
Go for it! What’s stopping you? It may just be the best thing you’ll ever do!
