Job description
Successful applicants will complete paid, nationally recognised training delivered by Challenger Training Pty Ltd, RTO 91830, before progressing through practical training, workplace mentoring and Verification of Competency.
Positions are expected to commence from August 2026.

- Observation and workplace training shift rate: $44.90 per hour plus superannuation
- Qualified rates may exceed $70.00 per hour, including applicable penalties, depending on roster and client placement
You will complete:

About the Role
As a Locomotive Driver Assistant, you will work alongside qualified Locomotive Drivers and support the safe and efficient operation of freight train services.
After completing the required training and client Verification of Competency, your duties may include:
- Supporting the train crew to ensure services operate safely and on time
- Assisting with train preparation, basic safety inspections and operational checks
- Assisting with shunting activities and yard operations
- Communicating with train crew, Network Control and site personnel
- Following safe-working rules, procedures and client instructions
- Completing work orders, operational records and digital entries
- Working safely around locomotives, wagons and rail infrastructure
We are looking for people who are
- Safety focused, reliable and willing to learn
- Calm, attentive and able to follow procedures
- Clear and confident communicators
- Comfortable working in a small team and independently
- Willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Available to work rotating rosters, including days, nights, weekends and public holidays
- Able to work hours aligned with operational and client requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold unrestricted Australian working rights
- Hold a current unrestricted Class C driver licence
- Be able to pass a Category 1 rail safety worker medical
- Be able to participate in ongoing drug and alcohol testing
- Hold HLTAID011 Provide First Aid or be willing to obtain it
- Have basic computer skills and sound literacy and numeracy
- Be able to satisfactorily complete a National Police Check
- Be able to attend training and work from Enfield and other required operational locations
